The education system in many African countries, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has historically focused more on theoretical knowledge than practical skills. This approach has stifled critical thinking, innovation, and the ability to question authority, leaving many young people ill-prepared for real-world challenges.
In 2016, our founder, Bernadette Itongwa Eagle, discovered the SINA-Social Innovation Academy in Uganda. Through her work with fellow youths from diverse backgrounds, Bernadette realized the limitations of the traditional education system firsthand. Her experience at SINA, where she participated in a five-step empowerment program, was transformative. She saw the potential for real change and was inspired to bring this innovative approach back to her home country, the DRC.
In 2017, co-founder Arsène Bashizi also applied for the SINA scholarship and joined the program. Like Bernadette, Arsène had experienced the same educational shortcomings and was passionate about creating opportunities for youth in the DRC. Their shared vision and commitment to addressing the challenges they had both faced naturally brought them together.
Living in SINA’s youth-led, self-organized, and “freesponsible” environment, Bernadette and Arsène quickly took on roles and responsibilities that equipped them with the skills and mindset necessary to replicate the SINA model. Since 2018, they have been implementing programs in the DRC, targeting marginalized youth and extending their support to disadvantaged youths in refugee camps across East Africa and urban areas. Their personal experiences and dedication to solving these issues for others drive SENTA’s mission forward.
